What to do in the Banton Islands

If your looking for paradise, you will enjoy staying somewhere on the Banton Islands, a group of seventeen islands that include the inhabited islands of La Carlota, Isabela, and Bantoncillo. These islands may have been inhabited since neolithic times, based on the Bantoanon language and burial caves. Banton has a population of 6,700 and is the slowest growing in the area. It is a traditional area, with many natural vistas.

Banton beaches are extremely clean and are dotted with huts and some facilities for beach goers. Swimming is great, especially during summer, although the waters may be a bit rough on some of the beaches. Togbongan, Nabalay, Sibay, Libtong and Nasunogan usually have calm waters all year long. All the beaches have lots of marine life, so you might like to snorkel or fish. Recodo Beach has fine white sand, and Macat-ang and Mainit Beaches are known for great sunbathing and hot springs and golden sand. You can also see a gorgeous sunset since it faces the west.

Caves dot the island, and are interesting to visit. Some ancient findings, like the oldest burial cloth in Southeast Asia have been found in Ipot Cave, now displayed in the National Museum. Ipot Cave can be found in a cliff facing the rising sun and is difficult to reach. Skulls, bones and some intact Banton coffins still remain there. Cathedral Cave is the biggest cave discovered, but no ancient remains have been found there. Other burial caves are Slide cave and Wall cave.

Fort San Nicolas is another attraction. Built in 1621 by Fr. Agustin San Pedtro it served as a shelter for locals as well as a defense from pirates.
