Diving in the Philippines All over the islands, there are many interesting places to dive. If that is your goal, you must plan your trip between November to May. Typhoon season creates choppy waves and poor visibility throughout the coasts. Here are some interesting dive sites to consider. Cathedral Marine Sanctuary Near Bagalangit Point lies a giant rock formation. Looking like an underwater amphitheatre, you can see fish like moorish idols and parrot fish in the corals seeded there. These dwellers often follow the divers and peer into their masks. Sombrero Island This island was named for looking like a hat, especially underwater. The rim stretches along the north to south side. Here you can see gorgonians, black coral, shells, turtles, rays, grunts, jacks, snappers, and a great variety of soft corals which are scattered all over. Mapating Rock This is an open reef that presents a challenge, and is only explored by experienced divers. Even they require help from local dive guides. The rock is surrounded by a fairly shallow area that ends in a series of drop-offs running down to about 20 meters or more. Twin Islands Here are many choices of dive sites you can visit when you stay at the Coral Beach Resort. Pink Wall is covered with pink coral where you can see filefishes, moorish idols, moray eels, banded coral shrimps and many other colorful fish. There is also Coral Garden where sting rays can be spied upon. Also the newly discovered South East Reef has a lot to explore. Lo-oc Bay Medio Island at Hamilo Cove If you want to explore an old ship, you can dive at the Hamilo Cove Wreck and see the Japanese freighter sunk in 1945. Many schools of large batfish live here, as well as stonefish and large lion fish. Also nearby is a crayfish cave, where multiple fish and crayfish call home, and a sleeping shark or manta ray have been spotted. |
