March to May are hot and dry months, while June through October are the rainy months. November to February are the cooler months, about 10 to 15 degrees so. The local will wear light jackets, but you may not need one.

During hot weather months, Women travelers typically wear a light blouse and shorts during the day, and skirts at night. Men wear collared T-shirts with slacks.

You may need your cell phone. Many Filippinos depend on theirs because of the less reliable land lines.

English is spoken throughout the Philippines, and is often understood, if not spoken. Filipinos often use their eyes, lips, and hands to convey messages. Raised eyebrows and a smile indicate hello or yes in answer to a question. Fixed eye contact between men is an aggressive gesture. To summon someone, use a downward wave.

Filipinos traditionally like polite language and soft conversational tones. Direct questions should also be avoided. Men might feel provoked and will fight for their self-esteem if you violate these rules. Never bring up politics, especially the Islamic insurgency. A preferred, friendly topic would be about the Filipinos family.

When shopping, try to bargain for a 10% discount. Filipinos are all used to negotiating when making purchases. As a tourist, you will be quoted a higher price, so don’t feel guilty about trying to bargain.

Never try to exchange American money for Philippines pesos, unless you want to give away your money. Only exchange money at official exchange sites.
