What to do in the island of Visayas

The Visayas are a group of islands between Luzon and Mindanao. Here you will find the island of Leyte, know as the first island sighted by the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century and also the landing point of the American liberation forces in 1944.

Cebu City

Cebu is the most densely populated island, and it has many famous tourist sites. You can visit the Magellan Cross, the actual wooden cross planted by Magellan himself for the baptism of the Rajah Humabon and 800 followers. Fort San Pedro is the oldest and smallest fort in the country, built in 1565.

Carcar

Many preserved Castillian houses, gardens and churches dot Carcar. The Chapel of the Last Supper in Mandaue City features hand carved statues of Jesus and the twelve apostles and dates back to Spanish times. There is also the Magellan Monument, on Mactan Island where Magellan died, killed by the chieftain, Datu Lapu-Lapu who was unwilling to be conquered. Datu Lapu-Lapu also has a monument here, as the first Filipino patriot.

Bohol Island

Near Cebu, this island is know for its limestone hills, some as high as 100 ft. They are known as the Chocolate Hills, because of the thin grass that dries and turns brown in the summer sun. Here there are also many white sandy beaches to enjoy with secluded coves, all accessible by roads. You can also purchase native handicrafts, like grass mats, hats and baskets. Baclayon Church, built in 1595 is the oldest church in existence in the Philippines. Reached by plane or ferry, this is an enjoyable destination.
